In Gulou, China, a peaceful summer evening took an abrupt turn when government officials marched into the church demanding to see the pastor. He was told the cross would be removed from the building within just a few hours. Fearing imprisonment for organizing an illegal gathering, the pastor told only one person. But word spread quickly, and soon the building was surrounded by church members, praying and shouting, "Cross, cross, cross!"

"We felt helpless," said an associate pastor. "We told them how important this cross is, but they didn't listen." With faith-filled certainty, he said, "They can take the cross from our church but they can't take it from our hearts." In answered prayer, the cross was not removed that night.

Later, however, Chinese officials returned to the Gulou church. This time the cross was removed.*

Persecution of the Church often brings revival. As believers strive to merge their identities as "Chinese" and "Christian," they are replacing their Communist philosophies with Christian values.* The Chinese believers are living their faith! The Church in China is growing by about 2.2 million new followers of Jesus annually! It is conceivable that China could become the world's largest Christian nation. And even with this amazing growth, 44 percent of the Chinese population is considered to be non-religious.* Millions of Chinese people still need to hear the gospel message!
